I have created this message board so that the class of '59 can find the latest information concerning our upcoming 50 year reunion.  Anyone having any information about the reunion is encouraged to submit a message to inform everyone.
We would also like to hear from everyone.  Give us a short bio of your life, pictures of the family, and anything else you would like to share.  It will help us not be embarrassed when we do not recognize each other at the reunion.
If you have any suggestions or ideas to make the reunion better or something else I could add to this website, please leave a message or send email.
Click the Reply 'above' or at the 'end' of this thread to leave a message.

Hope to see everyone at the reunion.
Tommy

A note from Sandra (Rodgers) Boyd

Thanks for your good thoughts.  About all I'm doing health-wise now is trying to stay positive and take radiation treatments daily until 30 have been done.  Then, I guess I'll go to Lubbock to see a doctor there who is having some luck with my kind of cancer.  The treatments will be worked out between him and my doctor here, so they will be done here.  Only time will tell.  I'm planning on the reunion, and have already done some Christmas shopping for next year.

Tom:
Thanks for getting in contact.  I seem to recall that it was "Tommy" when I last saw you.  Correct?

I really appreciate the invite to the reunion.  That would be a hoot to attend.  Unfortunately I have a special niece getting married that weekend, here in PA.  That, plus the travel distance, will not allow me to attend.

I looked at the web site, however.  Boy, did that bring back some memories, even though I left Paducah midway during our 7th grade.  I feel very privileged to have been invited to your reunion, and wish it were possible.  I have been back to Paducah a few times since I left, once when my mom died in 1995.  I feel some importance with keeping in touch with the past, and this would have been a good time to further that interest.

I will try to pull together a photo or so and some description of what has ensued with me since 1953.

Thanks again for making contact.

Regards,
James Pressley (potential class of 1959)

Mary and I journeyed to Lubbock, Texas last week to celebrate Mary's mother's 88th birthday and to see Sandra Rodgers who was there to see another doctor for a second opinion on her treatment for the cancer she is fighting.  Unfortunately, they did not have an alternative plan and said that the doctors in El Paso were doing all the right things.  However the results have not been as good as the first time when she fought it.

It was a real joy to get to see Sandra and feel her positive attitude.  She was cheerful and had an enjoyable sense of humor.  She is still determined to make the 50th class reunion and would like to see all of her old friends there.

A Shirley Jeter Encounter

I had an interesting experience in contacting some of our classmates about the reunion.  I noticed that Shirley Jeter had a mailing address of Mt. Pleasant, Texas.  When I sent her an email, asking for some more information, I mentioned that Mary and I frequently go to Mt. Pleasant, primarily to attend a show that they have every Saturday night called the Pleasant Jamboree.  I stated that we could probably meet each other by chance someday in Mt. Pleasant and probably not recognize each other.

To my surprise, Shirley writes back and tells me that she and her husband, own the Pleasant Jamboree.  She always works the concession stand and her husband works the ticket booth.  So, I had already met Shirley face to face several times, and neither one of us recognized  each other.  What a small world we live in after all.

On our last visit to the Pleasant Jamboree, Mary and I made it a point to introduce ourselves.  It was a real pleasure to see and  talk with Shirley after so many years.  It seemed like every one that attended the show knew and spoke to Shirley on their way in and out. Shirley and her husband are very popular in Mt. Pleasant.  Many of the patron's of the show expressed how much they appreciated Shirley for keeping the Pleasant Jamboree going.

It really is a good show with an outstanding band.  The singing talent is also very good most of the time.  They have different performers every week. The last Saturday of every month is dedicated to the 50's music. Mary and I have enjoyed every show that we have attended there.  So, if you are in the Mt. Pleasant area on a Saturday night, stop by to see Shirley and enjoy a good show.

Way to go, Shirley Jeter, '59 graduate of PHS.

What do you miss the most about Paducah or Paducah High?
Charlie had mentioned that he had attended a reunion  where that question (except the city was different)  was used to stimulate some discussion and reminisceing during the class meeting of the reunion.  You might think about it to see if you can come up with things that everyone has not thought of in a long while and will bring back memories for some.
The things that probably everyone will remember is driving around the 'square' and meeting everyone, the catwalk at school, and piling into someone's old car for a drive during noon break. My personal memories is of walking Mary to class, the many double dates we had with friends,  drag racing against John Arnold, and many more.

Please feel free to add those special moments that you remember and would like to share.

The latest message from Sandra (Rodgers) Boyd

Who needs to breathe?  Ha!   I have my brain MRI tomorrow (that is the first place my kind of cancer likes to move to), and a full body scan on 4-20, then we will know what course of action we take from here.  I'm probably going to go to Phoenix, some doctor my doctor is discussing my case with, but may end up just staying here and taking another round of some kind of chemo.  I'm having a little more trouble breathing now than before, but not bad, just the effects of the radiation burning good as well as bad tissue on my lung.  Laughter is great medicine.
If I'm sending too much, let me know.

Love you, Sandy

Hey--this message board is neat--but hopefully more of you will send messages, bio, and pictures.  Tommy is doing a great job.  Come on out.  I would like to hear and know about each and everyone of you.

A couple of updates from Sandra:

April 14, 2009

I got the results of the MRI of the brain today and two items of good news -- they found a brain, and they found it to be normal!!  CT scan of the body next Monday (and we all already know I have a body) -- will report on that when report is ready.

Love to all,

Sandy

April 22, 2009

I didn't get quite as good news on my body scan -- good news is that the cancer has not spread to any other organs, and the radiation caused the tumor to shrink to 2.0 cm; bad news is that there is a new one in the upper part of the same lung that is 4.4 cm.  I go to Phoenix on Monday to a research facility to see if there is anything they can offer me in the way of treatment or a clinical trial.

Keep your chins up, keep me in your prayers, and know that I love each of you.

Sandy

News From My Sister (Sandra Rodgers Boyd)  April 27, 2009

Having expected to hear something from my sister at 4:30 and waiting until 6:30 when she finally called, I had predicted the worst--that she'd gotten bad news and wasn't able to talk about it.  However, she didn't get out of her appointment until 6:30 and I knew when I heard her voice that she had good news!

She's been accepted into a trial treatment of medication that cuts off oxygen to the tumor; small cell lung cancer which she has thrives on oxygen--as do many other types of cancer.  She will be going back to Scottsdale for the next four Mondays, the last of which she'll be given scans to see if the tumors have decreased in size.  If they have, she'll stay where she is; if not, she'll move into a different trial.  This could last for up to 7 months.  She has HOPE, not for lots of years, but a longer life than her El Paso doctor had prepared her for.  It was wonderful to hear the excitement and hope in her voice.

Today has been a very long day; I was so afraid she'd just be sent home to "get right with her maker," as the saying goes.  Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers; she still needs them.  These are just "trials" so the outcomes aren't definite, but so much better than being told there is nothing else to try.

Love to all,

Paula
